Feedback: Negative, Positive or Both?

“Feedback by nature must be negative to an extent if it is to be helpful in improving performance. Much of the feedback that instructors give on assignments is to specifically point out the shortcomings of a student’s work and motivate the student toward improvement. Such feedback is intended to be received as ‘constructive criticism.’ However, although students may say they value feedback in general, when it is about their own performance and by extension themselves, the impact on self-esteem may provoke a negative reaction.”

This quote appears in a study that explored how much feedback instructors should give students and whether giving too much might be deleterious.

I do take issue with the quote. Students, teachers, indeed anyone can improve with positive feedback, too. Positive feedback tells you what you are doing right or what works. If you know that, you can do more of it. It is true that you won’t improve as much if you only get positive feedback. You also need to know what isn’t working or could be done more effectively.

It seems to me what works best for students (and teachers, for that matter) is a balance of positive and negative feedback. First and foremost that balance ought to reflect the overall quality of the performance, presentation, or whatever has been completed. If the work was mostly not very good, the feedback should reflect that. But very few things are completely wrong or without anything worthy of a positive comment, although I have read some student papers that come pretty close.

The balance of feedback also needs to respond to what the teacher knows of the learning needs of the student. Does he need a sharp stick? Can he handle it? Does she need encouragement? What two or three things most need work?

Some instructors do err on the side of providing too much negative feedback. They don’t seem to think they’ve done a good job grading if they haven’t pointed out everything that is wrong with the completed work. And sometimes the feedback isn’t always framed as constructively as it might be—it’s excessively judgmental and focuses on the person rather than the performance. So, negative feedback can discourage a student, engender anger, and not produce the desired results. But these aren’t inherent flaws that should prevent instructors from providing feedback about the problems.

Providing feedback that promotes learning is a time-consuming and intellectually challenging task. But it doesn’t have to be only negative if students are to improve. Negative feedback, when balanced with positive input, can be delivered without injury to self-esteem.

What is pinging and why should I ping my feed?

Pinging signals to RSS feed aggregators and directories that your RSS feed has been updated, otherwise they may not realize that new content is available. There are a number of automated ping services available and some of the RSS submission programs like RSS Submit include a pinging function.

Hemp Activist Runs in Federal Election

The Hemp activist from Canada, Rick Simpson, known for associating positive effects of smoking marijuana and cancer treatment runs for public office. Simpson has been known as the inventor of marijuana “miracle drug” as he cultivates the plant, turns it to oil, and distributes it to ill people with different diseases free of charge.

Simpson had cured his cancer through hemp oil in 2003. His campaign to prove the positive effects of smoking marijuanaand cancer treatment started after being healed. He said he had contacted politicians and organizations in support of his campaign. Simpson, in his website www.phoenixtears.ca, has expressed his intention to run for office. He stated that he is offering the public a cure for different diseases including cancer. He said that he have made hemp oil available to many people for the past few years. He was one of the few people who bravely publicized an inverse association between smoking marijuana and cancer.

In his previous interviews, Simpson claimed that marijuana or Hemp have been used as medicine throughout history. He then questions as to why marijuana is being restricted in Canada when it has been the most used medicinal plant prior to the modern ages. He explained that as the hemp, which contains high percentage of THC is turned to oil; one will achieve amazing healing effects. He added that hemp oil is a cure-all drug, which can be produced easily on a large scale at reasonable costs. Simpson has decided to run for public office claiming that the government is not telling the Canadian people the truth, specifically on positive effects of smoking marijuana and cancer treatment. He said he can no longer stand by as ignorance, graft, and corruption ruin the nation.

Simpson had admitted having medical issues of his own; although he stressed that he is capable of representing his people in a proper and honest way. For instance, Simpson linked the government and the pharmaceutical industry as restricting the positive effects of smoking marijuana and cancer treatment to the public. He said the government to make people believe that hemp or marijuana is harmful to one’s health passes laws. He said hemp is not dangerous and that he had sworn to many affidavits of people having serious medical states; thus, he said hemp oil had been helpful to these people.

With regard to pharmaceutical industry, Simpson had stated that such industry sold hemp-based medicines for years knowing of its healing effect. He had noted that the pharmaceutical companies had sold a watered down version of hemp medicine, which are mostly in suspension and mixed resin pain pills. More so, Simpson said he did not find evidence that such companies sold real high-grade hemp oil.

Thus, he had asserted that the government and the pharmaceutical industry had kept the positive effects of smoking marijuana and cancer treatment as well as cure of other diseases from the public. He said both entities stand in front of the public with the same reasoning: “you can’t sell the people medicine if you heal them.” As such, according to Simpson, the public does not get what they should.

New Syndicated Editorial Cartoonist – Randall Enos!

It is rare that we see a great new editorial cartoonist enter our shrinking profession these days.  I’m thrilled to announce that we have added longtime cartoon illustration great Randall Enos to Cagle Cartoons. We will be syndicating his unique cartoons twice a week through our syndicate to over 850 newspapers. View Randy’s cartoons here.

Randy has been creating illustrations for magazines, newspapers, books, posters, CD covers and animated films for well over 40 years!  Among his clients are the New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Atlantic, Life, and Playboy, to name just a few.  Randy was a regular in the National Lampoon – I read Chicken Gutz regularly when I was in college.

Randy has been around in high profile spots for so long that I’m sure his unique look is recognizable to everyone.  Randy does all of his cartoons as linoleum block prints. That sounds like madness, but it is true – I have one of his carved linoleum blocks in front of me right now. Instead of drawing a cartoon with pen and ink, Randy cuts it out with knives, in reverse, into the surface of a sheet of linoleum. The uncarved areas become the relief, which are then inked with a roller and pressed onto paper – then he scans it into the computer – isn’t technology great?

Since Randy’s work is mostly illustration, I wasn’t sure what his political cartoons would be like; it looks like he’ll be pretty far to the left.  I think it will be great fun to see Randy mix it up with the other editorial cartoonists, and nice that his work looks so different from everyone else’s cartoons, since editorial cartoonists are so often accused of having a similar look.  Welcome aboard, Randy, go kick some butt!

Installing Granite Countertops

Granite is not only the hardest material available for countertops it’s also the most expensive, with prices starting at $60 a square foot. Though adding granite countertops to any kitchen can be quite costly, they remain the premiere choice in many new and remodeled homes. The beauty and warmth offer an aesthetic appeal that can’t be found in other countertop materials.

Granite does cost more than other countertop materials, with the majority of the price coming from labor costs. Installing granite countertops is not a project for the do-it-yourself homeowner, seeking to save money on installation costs. Installation must be left to the professionals who have the right training and equipment. However, a homeowner can save money on some of the preliminary preparation and demolition work. Before the process of installing granite countertops can begin, range tops, the sink and the old countertops must be thoroughly removed. The remainder of the installation process must be left to the professionals.

After the granite countertops are ordered, an individual from the installation company will come to precisely measure the cabinetry and create templates for the installation. At the time the templates are created, the professional should be able to tell you where all the seams will be. The fewer seams, the better, as regardless of how well the joint is fitted, straight lines in the natural stone are very noticeable. At this time they will determine if any specialized tools will be required for the sink and range cutouts.

Prior to the installation, metal rods and plywood will be added to the top of the cabinetry to create a strong, level surface with additional support for the sink and range. This is a critical step, as it prevents the granite slab from breaking during regular use. Success of a granite countertop installation includes attention to the varying thickness of a slab.

Although slabs are carefully cut, there may be high and low spots on the bottom therefore, leveling is an important step of the preparation process to protect the stone.
Installers will later bring granite slabs that measure approximately four-by-eight feet or four-by-twelve feet and are only about three centimeters thick. The slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and must be properly carried to reduce stress on the slab during transport. If the granite is not carefully laid on the cabinetry, it could crack at a later time during regular use.

The slab of granite will be precisely cut with a diamond tip saw to fit the templates. The jointing seams will be sealed and the edge will be treated to create a smooth, attractive perimeter. The installer can add any requested trim inlays, such as metallic materials or separate indications of a solid color. The installer will then apply a penetrating sealer and polish the surface to a smooth reflective finish.

The installers will note the positioning of electrical outlets, the sink, and the faucets, as the thickness of the granite may alter some of the process for re-installation of these items. The installers will also be trained to make adjustments for setting a cook top and re-securing the dishwasher stabilizer brackets without causing harm to the newly laid granite countertop.

The expertise required for installing granite countertops requires that this be one job left to the professionals. When properly installed, granite countertops are a beautiful and valuable addition to any home kitchen.

Pass Drug Test

If you have ever been required to Pass Drug Test, you know that drug tests can be intimidating. I can understand why a person would not want to pass such a test voluntarily. Unfortunately, if a person fails the test, he might lose his job. I do not wish anybody that this happens to him. There are other consequences of failing a drug test such as embarrassment or emotional distress. Submitting to drug testing is required in many places. The only solution I can think of are detox products. Quality detox products will help a person pass any drug test.

3 Italian Cuisine Ideas For Home Chefs

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to sample Italian cuisine from the various regions of Italy? Given the diverse climate from north to south, cuisine varies according to ingredients available. As an example, Northern Italian regional cuisine depends less on oil oil, pasta and the traditional red tomato sauce. Here, the cuisine identifies with crossover ingredients like arborio rice which is used for some of the best risotto dishes in the world. Polenta is also a staple of Northern Italian cuisine. Sauce for pastas are generally made from cream and butter. And meats tend to include rabbit, veal, especially in Osso Bucco where veal shanks are the main ingredient. Cheese is also an important feature of Northern Italian cuisine with Fontina, rather than parmesan, being a chosen favorite. Other meat dishes can include game birds. In general, a Northern Italian meal has all the characteristics of a hardy, yet simple, meal. Since truffles can also be found in this region, these delicacies are often found in many Northern Italian dishes.

If you were invited to a Northern Italian dinner, a hearty chard or escarole soup might start the meal. Platters of cheeses including Gorgonzola and fruits like figs and dried plums might be offered. The main course might be a rabbit ragu or Osso Bucco cooked until the meat falls off the bone. With this may be served, polenta or a lovely wine enhanced risotto with delicate truffles. For dessert, you might be offered a ring cake of dried fruits, perhaps, apricots, dates or figs. And, for libation, regional wines.

The Central Italian Region cuisine defines most of what the world perceives as “Italian” cuisine. Typically, red sauces, pastas like stuffed ravioli and, of course, pizzas which began as a tomato pie. However, lesser known Central Italian Regional cuisine includes smoked bacon, known as pancetta, and others like salami and mortadella, a type of smoked bologna. Fish is also an important ingredient in Central Italian cuisine. Nothing is more seductive than fresh fish sauteed in a tomato sauce with freshly grown basil, a bit of olive oil and crushed garlic. Many dishes also include shell fish, particularly clams and mussels. Central Regional desserts are spectacular: cassata, clafouti, delicate pastries like cannolli and sfogliadella, a clam shell shaped pastry filled with a delicate mascarpone cheese filling. From the Southern Region of Italy comes Pecorino, Parmesano Reggiano, Mozzarella and Ricotta cheeses which are used in many dishes in this region. Calzone, a pizza dough stuffed with ricotta cheese and cured ham is one example. Most pastas are fresly made rather than dried. In this region, many dishes include mullet, oysters and tiny anchovy as well. Fava beans served with oil oil, garlic and freshly grown basil make a very simple Southern Italian meal. A sprinkling of Parmesano Reggiano, a loaf of freshly baked bread and a glass of wine make a hearty, satisfying dish. Zuppa de pesce, a thick fish soup, includes traditional ingredients like garlic, tomato, beans, pepper and fresh herbs like coriander and oregano.

Cheap Airfare To London

Too start off we should get an idea of the differences in the prices in the last 7 years. The Asia cheap flights went from close to $500 Bangkok LA or Bangkok San Francisco to over $1000 today; at this rate it is not hard to imagine the prices doubling again in the next 7 years as things like carbon taxes and higher fuel cost combined with general inflation and more people in Asia joining the ranks of the middle class and spreading their wings, doubling of airfares really isn’t that far fetched. The cheapest flight from the west coast of the USA either Seattle, San Francisco or Los Angeles today is going to cost you over $1100 USD even if you do everything right like book in advance 60 to 90 days, Book on a Monday – Tuesday, and select mid week flights while being flexible with multi stops and longer layovers.

China Air and Eva Air out of Los Angeles or San Francisco these 2 airlines can get you to Bangkok cheaper that any other airlines out there on a regular and consistent basis. Something recently learned is that China Air will allow you to exchange frequent flyer miles for a discount on the flights, 5% on an $1100 flight is $55 USD; this kind of thinking will make them a favorite of the budget travelers and businessman that are flying on their own dime. The great thing about this is that China Air will actually ask you when you are booking if you have any miles to cash in! I don’t ever remember a big western airline encouraging me to cash in my frequent flyer miles.

Air Asia, Tiger Air, Cebu Pacific, Virgin, China Southern many of these are becoming household names even in the west if you have any exposure to Asia at all certainly every one has heard of the virgin group of companies run by Sir Richard Branson. I love to talk about these cheap regional airlines as they are what keep the big guys honest. They are at a disadvantage that they are not in the big databases and so you do not pick up these flights unless you specifically look for them. I anticipate that a booking engine will evolve that will include these cheaper air carriers which will put a lot of pressure on the big travel sites to get them into their mix as well right now they are controlled by the big airlines who have zero incentive to include the little niche budget airlines.

Finding a hub city that has service from one of these carriers can result in fantastic savings when you get off the big international carriers like United, JAL, Asiana, Malaysia Air, Thai Air ect. This is where the special deals come in subscribing to the airlines news letters setting up notifications on Side Step, Mobisimo and the big sites Orbitz, Expedia and Travelocity to hub cites that have regional carriers going to your destination. The bigger Asia hubs being Beijing, Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore KL. Tokyo and Hong Kong while being hubs don’t have a lot of budget carriers so are harder to route through Manila has lots of budget carriers out but very expensive in general to get there compared to Bangkok or Singapore. In general it is cheaper to fly past the Philippines and double back I can remember one time flying from Bangkok to Singapore back to Bangkok on to Manila and saving a couple hundred dollars for the extra flying time!

So to sum up as the airfares to Asia go up your top 3 best bets to get the cheapest flights to Asia We feel will continue to be China Air and Eva Air from the west coast of USA, getting off the international carries in the larger Asia hub cites with good budget carrier service for the last legs switching over to the regional budget carriers like Air Asia Tiger Air, China Southern, Virgin Group airlines and Cebu Pacific and doing the research to find the cheap promotional airfare deals and watch from as far out as you can.

Cheap Airfare To London

Fred Tittle is a seasoned Asian traveler with a massive scuba diving addiction. With extensive ties to Asia he founded Cheap Charlies Hotels Asia when he found himself spending lots of time looking on the internet for and not finding what he knew to be there for cheap hotels and budget guesthouse accommodations. As time goes on he also discovered that the cheapest flights and discount airfares were also hard to find.

Pennsylvania Proposes Adding Table Games

Pennsylvania got a taste of the easy money generated from gambling when it legalized slot casinos in the state in 2004. In the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, taxes generated by the legalized slot casinos are up 24.7% for a grand total of $873,899,361 to date.

In an effort to increase the gambling revenue, State Rep. Bill DeWeese officially introduced a proposal on Tuesday to add table games to Pennsylvania’s casinos and if approved it is sweet deal for the state. Under the measure, casino operators would pay a $10 million fee up-front to inaugurate games such as blackjack, poker and craps at their currently slots-only facilities. There would be a $500,000 annual renewal fee as well as daily tax of 18 percent and a local-share assessment of 2 percent of its daily gross table-game revenue. This is in addition to the money being paid to the state from the slot machines.
