DSLR Lenses on the Cheap

Just because you have a fancy new DSLR, it doesn’t mean you are limited to fancy new DSLR lenses. In the olden days, all you had to worry about was whether a lens would fit your camera. Now you need to worry about crop factors and autofocus, too. But the reality is that pretty much any lens that will fit onto your camera will work. There will be some limits, but some of them are actually useful.

The crop factor, for instance, can work to your advantage. If you shoot wildlife the 1.5x focal length multiplier will turn a 400mm lens into a 600mm lens. Conversely, a lens made for a DX format camera will become ultra-wide on a regular film of full-frame digital SLR, although generally the quality of these lenses isn’t so good and you’ll probably get some vignetting at the corners where the larger sensor “sees” the edges of the lens.

But the point is that, if you are willing to make some compromises, you can buy some amazing, top-quality lenses for very little money. So instead of picking up that third party, vibration reduction auto-everything lens, take a trip to your camera store and see what is on offer on the second-hand case.

To keep it easy, I’m using a lens I picked up recently. It’s a Nikon 24mm ƒ2.8 AF-D, released in 1993, and I’m using it on a Nikon D60, an SLR with a DX sized sensor. This means the lens gives a 35mm equivalent of 35 mm.

Why buy a full-frame lens for a DSLR? First, Nikon doesn’t make a prime (fixed focal length) 35mm equivalent for digital cameras. In fact, the only prime DX lens is a 10.5 mm fisheye. Second, although ƒ2.8 isn’t a particularly fast maximum aperture, it lets in a lot more light than a zoom lens and is a lot better at throwing the background out of focus (wide aperture equals shallow depth of field.)

Third, prime lenses often give sharper results and are smaller and lighter than zooms. Finally, when I eventually spring for a full-frame DSLR (the D700 is looking mighty tempting), I won’t have to sell the lens.

28mm-3.jpg

So, I have a tack sharp lens which works at 35mm, the favorite focal length of candid shooters and street photographers (the most popular Leica lens is a 35mm prime). But what are the problems?

First, and probably the scariest for photographers who have grown up with digital, is the lack of autofocus. The lens was designed 15 years ago, before Nikon put motors in its lenses. Old film bodies and the higher-end DSLR bodies have motors inside which will focus these older lenses. The D60 doesn’t.

This means manual focussing, which is to be honest a little tricky these days. Older cameras had focussing screens with a split-image aid on them — line up the two halves and you were ready to go. Plus, older manual focus lenses had a much longer “throw” and a stiffer focussing ring which made accurate hand-focussing a lot easier. The D60 has an LED rangefinder in the viewfinder which tells you when you have got the subject sharp, but it’s not ideal.

Thankfully, the lens is wide enough to allow some cheating. Taking advantage of a big depth of field, you can stop the lens down to ƒ8 and use what is called the hyperfocal distance. In practical terms, if I set the focus to 4’11”, everything from three and a half feet to infinity will be sharp. This means you can wander the streets and snap away, confident that almost everything will be in focus.

Another advantage of these older leses is that they were made before the camera did everything for you and therefore have some handy extra markings:

28mm-2.jpg

Below the focus scale you see the depth of field markings. Say the lens is set at ƒ22. Just move the “infinity” mark to line up with the number 22 on the left and everything from there to the 22 mark on the right will be acceptably sharp.

You also see a white dot just between 11 and the focus mark. This is for infrared photography. Infrared light has a different wavelength and will not focus where visible light does. What you do is to focus normally and then twist the barrel to line the distance up with this dot instead of the central marker. It’s pretty useless with digicams as they have built-in filters to cut out the infrared light. It’s nice to know what it does, though.

There is also a manual aperture ring. Sadly, this can’t be used, and you need to lock the dial to ƒ22 for the camera to function. It’s a shame, as this is a quick and easy way to set the aperture size.

If you are used to using your camera’s auto exposure settings, especially the flash modes, some older lenses will limit them. This is because they don’t offer all the depth information needed for the camera’s calculations. But then, with a digicam, you can always take a test shot and tweak the settings.

Try it. Not only will you be able to get a very nice lens for little money, the limitations will be both fun and informative: you’ll learn a lot about photography just by having to do a few things for yourself. It’s like having somebody to tie your shoelaces for you. It’s great when they’re around, but isn’t it better to know how to do it yourself?

Indian Real Estate

The last couple of years have seen the investments of property and real estate investors go up, up and away, with real estate appreciating 10-times over in the past 3-years, in Bangalore alone. And, certain areas of Gurgaon and Noida have also seen a similar appreciation, with on an average, land prices in many Indian cities having tripled in value over the same period.

A significant appreciation at the beginning of the year, and it was felt from this point onward, real estate prices would at best stagnate or at worst, begin a slow climb down. But, that has not happened due to the DLF effect, DLF which is making India a property-driven stock market, and is coming out with the mother of all IPOs (Rs. 10,000-crore) in June 2006.

A CLSA report confirms that post this IPO, India will become a property driven stock market very much like Hong Kong & Singapore in the Nineties. And, post the IPO, projections are DLF will have a market cap of over Rs. 1,00,000-crore, making owner K.P. Singh (owning 88% of the company post IPO) the richest Indian based out of India, pipping Azim Premji and Ambani Brothers to the post. Even in 2004, given the value of the land bank owned by DLF, KP Singh was touted to be amongst the richest Indians. Since then, real estate valuations have gone up dramatically, and to understand what DLF is all about, a trip to Gurgaon is necessary.

Starting out by colonizing and developing a number of Delhi colonies e.g. Model Town, Greater Kailash – I / II, 60-year old DLF was left without any business when Indira Gandhi made Delhi Development Authority (DDA) the sole agency responsible for developing property and real estate in Delhi in 1970. Without business, but with significant cash assets in the late 1970s, DLF scouted around, only to home in on the sleepy little village of Gurgaon. Chosen for the Maruti project, Gurgaon made good business sense.

The next 10-years saw DLF buying over 10,000-acres of land in and around Gurgaon. Phase I of DLF’s first township was developed in the late eighties and DLF began to sell plots here. Seeing the potential, soon Ansals and Unitech followed DLF to Gurgaon. The rest is history!

Today, the Gurgaon skyline is dotted with shining glass edifices that sing paeans of praise to progress made by DLF. And, DLF City comprising of five phases is spread over 5000-acres, while the group has many other plans up its sleeve. All this was happening when not many had heard of DLF. Focusing on becoming a Pan India player, the last 2 years has seen DLF buying big properties in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Jaipur.

For those who thought the Indian real estate sector was heading for a bubble in 2006 had better re-think the property scene again. The fact is share prices of real estate developers has gone up 100%. Take for example:

1. UNITECH- In the past 3-years (May 2003 to April 2006) Unitech share prices have gone up from Rs. 40.60 to Rs. 6068 per share.

2. ANANT RAJ INDUSTRIES:- In the last 1-year (May 2005 to Apr 2006) Anant Raj Industries share price has gone up from Rs. 15.60 to Rs. 816.2.

3. ASHIANA HOUSING & FINANCE LTD.: In the last 40-days (20th March 2006 to 30th April 2006) Ashiana Housing share price has gone up from Rs. 97.1 to Rs. 352.2.

For stocks to appreciate over 100-times in one’s lifetime is a very rare phenomenon, and so many in real estate could only mean, there has been a shift in the way people view real estate in India or else there is a bubble building up. A few incidents do indicate there could be a minor bubble, as a pre launch offer of a Jaipur property was for Rs. 2-lakh, on the promise in a month’s time, the same could be sold for Rs. 3-lakh to another investor, a 50% return within a month. Then again, recently a small block of land in a Gurgaon village sold for over Rs. 3-crore.

When the CLSA report starts valuing Infosys based on the value of its land bank, one has to start questioning what is happening. It means no longer does one have to work hard to become rich; one simply has to buy real estate, and wait to sell it for a higher price. The rate at which real estate prices are spiraling higher and higher, making real estate owners richer and richer, within a decade Indians will be as prosperous as the Americans.

But, to be honest, one feels a correction in real estate stocks is needed in the long term, meanwhile, short-term wise, anything can happen, and the sky’s the limit for real estate! Always, a good buy, if you have the money or the bank will loan you some, buy a house or two, throw in a commercial property, and you will be clinking glasses with the likes of Azimji Premji and the Ambanis! Remember to toast the value of real estate when you are rubbing shoulders with the moneybags of India! You owe your billions to Indian real estate!

10 Flat Iron Success Tips

If you’re not getting the results you want when you flat iron your hair, it may not be iron–it could be your technique. Try these 10 tips for flat ironing for enviable results!

1. Begin with Well-Conditioned Hair

Before you even turn on that flat iron, ask yourself this: is my hair well-conditioned and moisturized? If it’s not, turn that iron off and tend to your hair first. Sometimes, we think that a good heat protectant product is supposed to do all the work, but that’s not true. You have to do your part to make sure you’re only heat styling hair that’s in a condition to take all of that heat without doing further damage. Only flat iron hair that’s been regularly conditioned and cared for; otherwise, applying heat to dry, brittle hair is only prolonging the inevitable–a major cut.

2. Flat Iron Clean Hair

The best time to flat iron your hair is immediately following a fresh shampoo and condition (and deep condition if necessary). You have to press clean hair; applying heat to hair that has products and dirt in it is doing nothing more than baking these old products and dirt in. Need a touch up during the week? Flat iron once more, with minimal heat, but that’s it; flat ironing is not for every day.

3. Use Smoothing Balm or Serum

After shampooing and conditioning, apply a smoothing balm or serum to your hair. This helps much more if your hair is chemical-free, but relaxed ladies can benefit from it, too. Look for humidity-resistant formulas if you live in a climate where humidity makes a frizzy mess of your straightening work as soon as you step out the door. Some balms and serums to try:

  • Matrix Biolage Smoothing Serum
  • John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Extra Strength Formula
  • BioSilk Smoothing Balm

A licensed chiropractor guides you in choosing the best travel pillow.

The standard U-shape travel pillows lack support under the chin. This allows your head to fall forward when you start to relax.  Standard U-shape travel neck pillows have padding in the back. This padding is largely unneeded since the high-back airline chair is there for support, much like your bed supports you when you are lying down.  Making matters worse, this unnecessary padding pushes your head forward even further accentuating the lack of support in front.

The weight of your head is now putting stress on your neck.  Not only will you be uncomfortable and unable to rest, you’ll likely end up tired, sore, and perhaps injured.

Picture your head and neck alignment when you are lying in bed. You naturally place yourself in neutral alignment, minimizing stress on your spine and neck postural muscles. You want to mimic this alignment as much as possible when you are sitting upright. Hanging your head forward or cocking it to one side is not only uncomfortable, but places great strain on your spine and neck postural muscles.

The best memory foam travel pillow is one that provides full support, including under the chin. This support helps you maintain proper alignment while sitting upright. Posture = comfort.

Maintaining proper alignment while traveling or sleeping upright is not only important with regards to personal comfort, but vital in reducing stress, soreness and preventing injury.

Western Canada’s Predator Ridge to Open Ridge Course

PREDATOR RIDGE IS A WESTERN CANADA golf resort located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. It’s about 275 miles east of Vancouver, and roughly the same distance north of Spokane, Washington. And it’s apparently a golf destination with a lot more than golf going for it: wine country, trails, lakes, streams and, of course, winter sports such as downhill skiing and snowboarding. The resort itself, lodgings and amenities (salon, spa, pools, dining, etc.) definitely look upscale from my virtual vantage point. There’s one top-rated golf course with another one set to open this summer. The Predator Course has hosted the Telus World Skins Games twice and is one of only two courses in Western Canada to be ranked in Score Magazine’sCanadian Top 25. It looks phenomenal. And I’m referring as much to the Canadian Rockies scenery as the course. Eye-popping.

In August Predator Ridge is opening a second 18 called The Ridge Course (photo). It’s designed by Doug Carrick, recognized as one of the top golf course architects in Canada. (Carrick has three of Score Magazine’stop five Canadian golf courses in his portfolio.) The new course is situated above Lake Okanagan in rugged forested terrain that includes natural features such as granite rock outcroppings. I don’t know this for sure, but I’m guessing this will be the top course of the two. The green fees are higher. That much I know.

Predator Ridge is currently offering a Bragging Rights Package. The pitch is that you get to play The Ridge Course before it opens to the public. The package includes two nights at the lodge and two rounds of golf, one at each course. They’re accepting bookings and limited tee times for July.

I’m not much of a braggart, but if I played there I’d probably have trouble keeping my mouth completely shut. You can’t fake stunning and I’d be shocked if the virgin course isn’t in exceptional condition. Unfortunately, I won’t be going but am glad to let you know about it, whether or not you’re a Canadian reader.

Nonprofit Management to Online MBA

My daughter did not have the typical college experience; she had my granddaughter when she was only nineteen years old and, while she had started her college classes, she wasn’t able to finish out the year, let alone earn her degree. Her subsequent marriage didn’t last and before long she and her daughter were living back at home with us – the entire family pitching in to try to make things work. She found a great job with a nonprofit organization and time marched on – all of us caught in the whirlwind that comes with having small children and working adults in a household. I was so proud of everything my daughter had accomplished on her own but I knew that she had things she still wanted to do and before long she found a way to go after them.

She told me that she was glad that she had gotten this job in nonprofit because while it may have just been a way to pay the bills at first it was quickly revealed to her as something about which she was passionate. In fact, she told me, she wanted to pursuenonprofit management as her long term career and she had found a way to earn her degree – online.

With an online nonprofit management degree program she could continue to work full time and care for her daughter, while doing all of her schoolwork at night or on the weekends when we could help with the baby. Everything was done online – on her computer – and it was the most convenient and best way possible of earning her degree.

She earned that nonprofit management degree – and we were all so proud. But she didn’t stop there! It seems she really caught the bug after earning her undergraduate degree and so she’s quickly moving on to get her online MBA. Nothing can stop her now!

Source Dedicated Server Guide

In this article, I will explain how to install, configure and run the Source dedicated server. I’ve tried to be as clear and detailed as possible, and I’ve included pictures of just about everything that I discuss. I will start with the minimum requirements and then move to the installation of a classic Counter-Strike: Source dedicated server. The rest of the article deals with other server sundries such as admin etiquette, plug-ins, etc. If you have any further questions after reading this guide, you are always free to visit the Source Dedicated Server Community forums and ask for help—that’s what we’re there for!

Requirements [top]

Servers use a lot of bandwidth (internet connection speed), memory and CPU/processor power. Because of this, not everyone can run a server; the most common bottleneck is the internet connection (usually isn’t fast enough). I will list a few things that are important for hosting a server—you should have at least the minimum requirements listed below—if you don’t there is no guarantee (and a high chance) that the server will not run optimally.

Today’s computers are capable of running most servers, but you should always take into consideration just what you want to host and to what level. There are limitations on everything and some machines might not even be able to run the server at all.

Processor/CPU power: To run a Source dedicated server you need at least a 1.0Ghz Intel CPU or equivalent. This will run a basic server with 20 slots at a good level of performance.

Memory: To run a normal server you will need at least 512MB RAM, you might need to restart the server every once in a while to clean up the memory. 1GB is enough to run over 60 player slots total.
